    1. Louis Akin In 2013 our criminal justice system operates with a 1613 understanding of mental illness. It is a sadly deplorable comment on our society that we have not progressed in our handling of the mentally ill in four hundred years and that vengence and punishment are our only ideas.

Texas Defender Service (TDS) is a non-profit organization established in 1995 by experienced death penalty attorneys.

Our mission is to establish a fair and just criminal justice system in Texas.

TDS aims to improve the quality of representation afforded to those facing a death sentence and to expose and eradicate the systemic flaws plaguing the Texas death penalty.
