About the Cause

Open Door was started in 1975 when an Austin couple wanted their two children--their son with Down Syndrome and their typically developing daughter--to be in a preschool together. Because of their son's disability, no program in central Texas would accept them both. The Open Door was established as a nonprofit in response to that need. Since its founding, Open Door remains committed to quality, inclusive early childhood education and care.
